Meet Jack, our Wolverine Trapper and Big Hairy Critter Expert
Ferocious growls and the splintering of wood by teeth and claws were the sounds that greeted us as we checked the trap that night. I wondered how long the log box trap could contain such a determined and powerful critter. A dream that I’d had since childhood was seconds away from coming true at last. I was about to meet my first wolverine face-to-face!
Since the summer of 1992, I’ve made it my mission to take a few months every year away from my “regular” job as a database programmer/analyst and to spend that time volunteering for various wildlife studies, guiding, backpacking or just travelling to some of the more remote places on the North American continent. The wolverine trapping incident that I described above occurred during January of 2007, when I started a two-month stint studying wolverines in Glacier National Park.
Most of us that love spending time in the outdoors have our own favorite areas of interest and expertise. For some, it’s geology. For others, aquatic life…or insects…or birds…or maybe even flowers. For me, it’s always been the big, hairy critters that share the woods with us. I’ve been extremely fortunate to have been able to work on studies directly involving wolverines, coyotes, wolves and grizzly bears. Naturally, one gets the opportunity to learn a lot about all of the other inhabitants of the forest as well.
I look forward to sharing some of what I’ve learned with you when you come on one of our backcountry trips, or even if you’re just stopping by at our Outdoor Shop. The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem is an amazing place to have as my “back yard”, and I never fail to learn more about it when I put on skis, snowshoes or hiking boots and head into the backcountry. Who knows what may be around the next bend in the trail?
