Tips to Get in Shape For Your Visit

February 16th, 2012

The weather across the country this winter has been crazy, varied, and generally warmer than average.  While the trails at Lone Mountain Ranch have been spectacular,  many areas, especially on the East Coast, have been balmy with little to no snow to practice on.  If you are thinking about visiting but worry that the lack of time on snow will leave you unprepared, here are a few tips to get you back in balance and feeling confident for your winter adventure.

Balance is a key component of Nordic skiing and a skill you can practice anywhere.  Several times throughout the day try standing on one foot for a few minutes.  Pay attention to your alignment.  Are your ankles and knees bent?  Are your knees over your toes and your hips over your knees?  These are key aspects in Nordic skiing to stay balanced and in control.  You can also work on your muscles by doing plenty of squats and lunges.  During the warmer months, avid Nords condition their muscles by Nordic hopping.  Stand on one foot with your knee deeply bent, begin to bring your other foot forward and push off into a lunge on the other foot.  Land on your heel with your knee bent and roll to the ball of your foot as you push off again.  Continue hopping forward from foot to foot with an emphasis on moving forward instead of up and landing with a deep lunge.  Cardio is also an important part of preparing for Nordic skiing.  Try to get in at least 30 minutes of cardio a few times a week.  With a little effort each week, you will soon be more than ready to hit the trails.
