Fly Fishing
THE GREATER YELLOWSTONE ECOSYSTEM HAS THE LARGEST CONCENTRATION OF BLUE-RIBBON TROUT FISHERIES ON THE PLANET. LONE MOUNTAIN RANCH'S UNIQUE LOCATION GIVES OUR GUESTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPLORE MANY OF THEM PROVIDING AN EXCEPTIONAL FLY FISHING EXPERIENCE. WHETHER YOU ARE AN AVID FLY FISHERMAN OR A NOVICE, OUR ORVIS® ENDORSED GUIDES WILL DELIVER A MEMORABLE TIME ON THE WATER.
The Lone Mountain Ranch fly fishing program is based on a two-tiered structure. The primary element of this structure is fly fishing instruction and technique refinement. The second, equally important element of our fishing program is to educate our guests about the science of fly fishing and the entire ecosystem that the trout call home. Your fly fishing trip will be tailored specifically based on your interests and skill level. Lone Mountain Ranch has a full time guide staff consisting of John Hall, Rick Reed, Kurt Dehmer, and John McKinnie. Independent contracted guides are also utilized to round out our guiding team. All of the guides at the Ranch are dedicated to teaching our guests all aspects of the sport of fly fishing, whether novices or experienced anglers.
Due to Lone Mountain Ranch’s unique centralized location, the most difficult part of trip planning can often times be deciding where to go fishing. As a fishing guest at the Ranch, you can explore the wilderness of Yellowstone National Park, escape to a high mountain lake or stream in the Lee Metcalf Wilderness , travel to private spring creeks, search for “gulpers”on Hebgen Lake, or fish one of four blue-ribbon troutrivers. These rivers include the Gallatin, Madison, Yellowstone and Missouri. Each one of these rivers provide excellent and diverse opportunities to catch wild rainbow, brown and cutthroat trout. Your guide will recommend waters based on the time of year, the insect hatches and what type of fishing experience you would like to have.
After fishing with our Orvis® Endorsed Guides, you will have a better understanding of casting techniques, basic knots, fish habitat, fly presentation and selection, as well as the biological, geological and human history of your fishing area.
As a guest of Lone Mountain Ranch, you and your children can experience Orvis® Fly Fishing 101 before booking a trip! With this complimentary program, you will learn basic casting techniques, a few fly patterns and some useful knots. You can then arrange your fishing trips, schedule time to practice casting techniques, or just talk "fishing" at the Outdoor Shop.

Walk/Wade
A walk wade trip is a great way to teach the many aspects of fly fishing. Beginners learn the basics of casting, fly presentation, knots and entomology, while the intermediate fisher may work on perfecting skills such as line mending and more advanced casting. More experienced fishermen enjoy learning new techniques as well as practicing the basics to find the fish.
Lone Mountain Ranch is located next to some fantastic small streams accessed only by foot. These waters are small feeder streams to the Gallatin and the many streams both large and small in Yellowstone National Park, as well as small private spring creeks.. Cutthroat, Rainbow and Brown trout live in these areas and a walk wade trip can make for a very rewarding day with both great fishing and beautiful scenery.
Drift Boat
Fishing a river from a boat allows the angler to see ten to twelve miles of river in a day. The Madison and Yellowstone Rivers, as well as Hebgen Lake, are our primary destinations for float trips and these waters offer anglers the chance to drift their fly literally over thousands of fish, with many opportunities to hook up with a trophy. Our guides are experienced boat operators who are able to teach very effective drift boat fishing techniques.
Float trips are full day only and entail an hour to an hour and half drive. The Missouri River is another destination, which is a bit further drive from Lone Mountain Ranch, but is a consistently rewarding trip.
