High Alpine Lakes and Streams

High Alpine Lakes and Streams

The Spanish Peaks in the Lee Metcalf Wilderness is home to some of the most pristine high alpine lakes and streams in North America. The trip begins at 8 a.m. and after a 2-3 hour horseback ride, guests arrive at one of the lakes or streams and fish for Cutthroat, Rainbow, Golden Trout or Arctic Grayling. These fish receive little fishing pressure and the scenery is spectacular. After a morning of riding and fishing, a lakeside lunch is served. On day trips, more fishing is done in the afternoon before heading back to the Ranch.

On the overnight trip, guests are able to fish the rest of the afternoon and evening before dinner over a campfire is served. The next day, there’s more fishing to be had before departing for the Ranch around 3PM for a gourmet dinner.

Trips leave either from the Ranch or guests can meet their guide at a designated trailhead. All riding gear, (saddle, tack, etc.) and fishing gear (rod, reel waders, float tube, flies) will be provided. For overnight trips, sleeping bags, ground pads, tents, meals and non-alcoholic beverages will be provided (beer or wine can be purchased in the saloon for the trip). A packing list is below as guests will want to bring specific clothing and personal items. Extra warm clothes are recommended as all of these lakes are above 8,500 feet.

A maximum of three guests can be accommodated on these trips and we can arrange a custom trip if there are more than three guests.
