Fly Fishing

The winter offers the same phenomenal fishing opportunities as the spring, summer and fall, just with a bit of chill in the air to keep things exciting.

Many guests ask “can you still fly fish with several feet of snow on the ground?” to which we proudly say “yes we can.” While winter fly fishing trips are shorter due to the shorter days, fishing opportunities are every bit as satisfying. As the Montana Office of Tourism says “God doesn't freeze rivers for a reason.”

Your day starts out with a short drive to the Gallatin River or a bit longer to the Madison River around 10AM. After filling up on a cup of hot coffee, tea or cocoa, you’ll cast your line with most likely a nymph or streamer on the end. On the days the sun raises the temperatures to above freezing, a dry fly may raise a dream fish.

For lunch, your ORVIS® Endorsed guide may strike up a small fire to warm your hands and toes up a bit before you sink your teeth into a hearty lunch. After refueling, you’ll head back out on the water and try to land a few more fish as you take in the solitude of winter. You’ll arrive back at the Ranch around 4PM just in time to visit Nicki for a massage or relax in the hot tub.

“Our guide taught us more in two guided trips than we have learned since we started fly-fishing a few years ago. He was more informative, helpful, and instructive than any other guide we've experienced in our guided fishing trips. He took the time to show us techniques, river knowledge, plant/animal life, and tricks of the trade.”
